About the Shed

The Shed opened in its doors on 16th June 2009 and after commencing for 2 mornings per week is now, due to increased membership, open 2 full days a week with expectations of additional opening days.

The Shed offers a fully equipped modern workshop with hand; electric and bench-mounted tools available for both wood and metal. Men will be able to help with community-based projects or work on their own individual jobs. The Men's Shed project has been developed to promote the health and well being of senior men in the community and to provide a place for men to meet each other, to network and to make friends. These ideas centre on a 'workshop', which is intended to encourage the exploration of woodworking and metalworking projects and skills.

The Shed was originally the workshop for the Home Modification and Maintenance Department of ADSSI (Aged and Disability Support Services) but after outgrowing the building it was offered to a group of local men who were known to have an interest in establishing a Shed in the community. From the beginning the support received from ADSSI has been outstanding from the funding of equipment, administration assistance, participation in help with setting structures in place and ongoing advice on numerous matters.

ADSSI is a non-for-profit organisation with over 20 years experience in working with people living in our community whose health or circumstances affect their ability to be independent. ADSSI provides support services to assist older people, people living with a disability and they assist carers to live safely and independently in the community. ADSSI also supports carers in their caring role and assists the general community as well as people from identified special needs groups including: veterans, people living with dementia, people living in rural and remote areas, people needing special cultural and language considerations, people who are financially disadvantaged and younger carers.

ADSSI operates by receiving funding from State and Federal Government initiatives and other funding sources. While all ADSSI not-for-profit activities are subsidised it is expected that clients contribute to the services they receive.

The Shed is also thankful to Wyong Council, The Entrance Leagues Club, Diggers Club, Mingara Club and Department of Housing for their sponsorship in the form of grants and donations to assist in the establishment of a fully functioning Shed.
